Heritage’s Ludicrously Capacious Auction of ‘Succession’ Costumes and Props Tops $627,000

Roman’s undelivered eulogy for Logan sold for $25,000, while that notorious Burberry bag was among several lots to realize $18,750!

DALLAS, Texas (Jan. 13, 2023) — The cast of the HBO^® Original Succession is spending this awards season collecting accolades for their work on the acclaimed, beloved series. Fans of Succession spent Saturday at Heritage Auctions collecting props and costumes from their favorite TV show.

Three hours after Saturday’s HBO^® Original Succession Showcase Auction began, it realized $627,825 thanks to the more than 2,000 bidders who participated worldwide — many of them first-time bidders at Heritage. The 236-lot event was a complete sellout, with most lots sparking bidding wars of which the Roy family would have approved.

The entire auction did extraordinarily well, especially those significant props tied to unforgettable moments throughout Succession. Ultimately, this was an auction for the fans, who adore Jesse Armstrong’s masterpiece and wanted to own a part of it, whether it was something seen, worn or spoken.

“And today,” says Jax Strobel, Heritage Screenbid’s managing director, “those fans became collectors. We could not be more pleased with Saturday’s auction, and we’re sure those taking home a piece of the Roy legacy will feel the same way.”

The top lot was Roman Roy’s eulogy that went undelivered at his father Logan’s funeral in the series’ penultimate episode, “Church and State,” which was written across three pink notecards (a fourth was left blank). Heated bidding over the notecards, seen so often they almost became a character, drove the final price to $25,000.

Another undelivered speech — Kendall’s prepared statement from Season Two’s finale, “This Is Not for Tears,” in which he was to take the fall for waystar|ROYCO’s cruise line scandal until he turned on Logan — realized $18,750. That lot, which opened live bidding at $3,600 Saturday, included two copies of the statement, including the one he tore up after walking off stage while his father seethed on the family yacht.

One of Succession’s most iconic pieces — the “ludicrously capacious” Burberry bag Greg’s date Bridget brought to Logan’s birthday party in the Season Four premiere “The Munsters” — also sold for $18,750. That lot also included the embroidered Sandro dress Bridget wore to the party.

A third lot also realized $18,750: the bronze bell from Logan’s townhome, which Greg nearly knocked over twice — early in Season One (causing him to apologize to the maid, “I apologize if my bell summoned you”) and again in the series finale. That bell, which opened live bidding at $3,100, summoned many bids before it sold Saturday.

Not far behind was the statement Shiv delivered to the media upon Logan’s death in the Season Four episode “Connor’s Wedding.” It realized $17,500.

This delightful speech also performed extraordinarily well: Connor’s wildly impersonal and deadpan-hilarious eulogy for Lester McClintock delivered during Season Two’s “Safe Room.” The handwritten speech — which begins, “I am here as a fellow human to acknowledge that Lester has, as we know, passed on” — realized $10,625.

One of the most significant props from Season One — the New York magazine cover featuring the entire Roy family accompanied by the headline, “The Crack-Up: The Roys and the Fracturing of America” — sold Saturday for $10,000. This is the issue Stewy hands to Logan as proof that “everyone f***ing hates you.”

Several other lots also realized $10,000, including a production-made alternate scorpion paperweight Tom gave to Shiv while their marriage crumbled in Season Four; a collection of keepsakes from Logan’s waystar|ROYCO offices, including an award; and Kendall’s driver’s license and credit cards.

The costumes and couture also performed exceptionally well throughout the auction — but one that was the antithesis of “quiet luxury” topped them all. The Doderick dog costume worn by Cousin Greg in the first episode, during his brief tenure being assaulted by kids as a Waystar parks mascot, opened the auction and set the tone when a bidding war drove its final price to $7,812.50.

Not far behind was Kendall’s Prada suit and Saint Laurent dress shirt worn in the Season Two episode “Hunting,” which realized $7,500.

Roman’s little-boy ensemble from “With Open Eyes” can be bought for $14 a two-pack at Walmart. It sold Saturday for $1,875 because the moment Kieran Culkin stepped on screen at the beginning of the long goodbye, it became coveted, iconic and the subject of myriad think pieces.

It was a thrilling auction, especially after Tom’s waystar|ROYCO badge opened at $2,600 to realize $6,875. Several lots later, Kendall’s badge — which had better access — sold for $6,250. Proof, perhaps, that Tom always wins.
