WHITE GLOVE SUCCESS FOR AUCTION OF COSTUMES AND PROPS FROM THE HIT SERIES “OUTLANDER” AT BONHAMS

London, UK – There were impressive results for the auction of props and costumes from the hit series “Outlander”, which ended on bonhams.com (6 August) following a successful live auction at Bonhams New Bond Street (5 August). The combined total for the live and online auctions, which featured 385 lots from across all 8 seasons, was £729,395. The top lot was Claire’s three wedding rings, which sold for £28,160 against an estimate of £800-1,200.

For more than a decade, the critically acclaimed hit TV series “Outlander” captivated audiences worldwide with a fan base devoted to Claire and Jamie’s enduring love story. On the heels of the eighth and final season which aired on STARZ (US) and MGM+ (UK) earlier this year, Bonhams hosted an exclusive auction of props and costumes from the landmark series produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books, “Outlander” follows Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), a former World War II nurse who travels through a mysterious stone circle to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Claire and Jamie have transported audiences from the rugged Scottish Highlands to the streets of Paris, and later to the Caribbean and colonial North Carolina.

Bonhams also hosted special exhibitions of the lots prior to them being offered for sale at Bonhams Edinburgh (26 May – 31 May) and at Bonhams New Bond Street (20 July – 4 August). Both exhibitions were free and open to the public, seeing more than 3,000 visitors attend in total.

The live auction also featured actor Graham McTavish, who plays Dougal MacKenzie in “Outlander”, as a guest auctioneer for one lot.

“Outlander” is produced by Sony Pictures Television, who will be donating a proportion of the proceeds of the sale to Beatson Cancer Charity.

Highlights of the sale include:

Claire’s three wedding rings. Various Seasons and Episodes 3. Estimate £800-1,200. Sold for £28,160.

The Red Ball Gown (toile version) created for Claire Fraser Season 2, Episode 2, “Not in Scotland Anymore.” Estimate: £3,000 – 5,000. Sold for £12,160.

A wedding night ensemble as worn by Claire Fraser from the wedding of Jamie and Claire. Season 1, Episode 7, “The Wedding.” Estimate: £2,500 – 3,500. Sold for £11,520.

A tartan corseted dress as worn by Claire Fraser. Season 1, Episode 12, “Lallybroch.” Estimate: £2,500 – 3,500. Sold for £10,800.

An Ardsmuir prison costume as worn by Jamie Fraser. Season 3, Episode 3, “All Debts Paid.” Estimate: £2,000 – 3,000. Sold for £3,840.

The Battle of Culloden costume as worn by Jamie Fraser. Season 3, Episode 1, “The Battle Joined.” Estimate: £1,500 – 2,000. Sold for £8,960.

The White Dress created for Claire Fraser, when she goes through the stones. Season 1 and various Episodes. Estimate: £1,500 – 2,000. Sold for £7,040.

A carved wooden snake as used by Jamie Fraser. Season 1, Episode 13, “The Watch” and Season 2, Episode 3, “Useful Occupations and Deceptions.” Estimate: £800 – 1,200. Sold for £5,120.

The Dragonfly in Amber prop Season 1, Episode 8, “Both Sides Now.” Season 2, Episode 13, “Dragonfly in Amber,” and Season 3, Episode 1, “The Battle Joined” as used by Jamie and Claire Fraser. Estimate: £800 – 1,200. Sold for £7,040.

The costume designers on “Outlander” were led by Terry Dresbach for Seasons 1–4, followed by Trisha Biggar for Seasons 5-7 and Nadine Powell for Season 8. Across all eight seasons, the series’ prop master was John Casey, alongside Egbert Kruger in Season 3.

The production designer for “Outlander” Seasons 1-5 was Jon Gary Steele, with Mike Gunn serving as production designer for Seasons 6-8. The set decorators for Seasons 1-3 were led by Gina Cromwell, with Tom Hannam also serving in Season 3. Beginning in Season 4, Stuart Bryce took over as set decorator and remained in the role through the final season.
